Tips When Considering Outdoor Ceiling Fans

While ceiling fans may all look similar, they are not all created the same. You need to consider many aspects of the product before making your selection. Outdoor ceiling fans are no different, as there are quite a few considerations to be made before you purchase this type as well, such as the amount of air that is circulated (efficiency), how much noise it makes, and the durability of the finish, the expected lifespan and whether the manufacturer will stand behind the warranty.

Some fans may look good but move very little air and obviously this would not be a very good choice for an outdoor ceiling fan. Check out the pitch on the ceiling fan blades. Blade pitch is the angle of the blades. Fans with a greater pitch means the air movement will be greater. This should also be in sync with the motor, as some manufacturers will attempt to cut corners on the materials used and sometimes the motors and other ceiling fan parts are not really powerful enough.

If a ceiling fan is making a humming noise, then it needs to be checked out as it can be a sign of a poorly manufactured product. The noise may be caused by improper metal fittings on the blades or motor, or inexpensive ball bearings that may have been used in order to cut corners. Since the outdoor ceiling fans effectiveness depends upon the amount of energy used and the volume of air it moves, motors with a low wattage use very little energy, which means less air is moved, resulting in very poor effectiveness.

Of course there are many parts on a poor quality indoor ceiling fan or outdoor fan that may break. One is the pull chain that gets pulled out of the housing incorrectly. As well, a mismatched motor size and blade pitch may also be signs of poor quality ceiling fan parts. If you do find one that is substandard, then you should bring it to the attention of the inspectors who allowed poor quality fans to be sold.

A few other things to be on the lookout for, especially in outdoor ceiling fans, are the finishes. Brass or bronze ceiling fan finishes may look alike but the less expensive units usually will tarnish quickly and that is not good for product that will be outside and subject to damp conditions. The finishes that are of high quality undergo a series of grinding and buffing between multiple plating processes. If the surface spots easily you may want to reconsider the purchase.

There are some precautions you need to take when working with marble. Never use vinegar or any other type of acidic products to clean marble floors. Marble is delicate and should only be cleaned with PH natural, gentle cleaners. Remember that mild acid present in vinegar can prove dangerous to the overall finish of your marble floor. Always use neutral PH cleaning products for cleaning marble. Here are some points you need to consider when cleaning marble.

If you want to dry and shine the marble, use dry terry cloth or paper towels. There are times when you feel that heavy duty marble. Cleaning is not enough to clean the marble. In case, you require something more than just a mild detergent to clean the marble, you can consider purchasing a high quality commercial marble cleaning product. Always follow the directions given by the manufacturer. Purchase a commercial grade marble polish to seal the marble it required. Never ever purchase harsh cleaning products sold by certain manufacturers.

Beer, wine, tea and citrus juices can prove hazardous to the elegance of marble. Clean it with hydrogen peroxide mixed with a few drops of ammonia and rub the marble gently with the help of a clean cloth until it retains its shine.

Cooking oils or any other type of greasy products can stain marble like floor. Hence, you should clean it up immediately with some soap and water.

Add Both Style and Functionality to Your Home With Soapstone

Published by Orlando Designer under Remodeling

Are you in the process of remodeling of your kitchen, bathroom or other area of your home? You may want to think about adding a variety of durable yet beautiful materials in order to increase the aesthetic and overall value of your home. One way to accomplish this is through the use of soapstone to create useful and fully functional soapstone countertops, stoves, fireplaces, tiles, and sinks.

Soapstone is quickly becoming a popular material alternative used by interior designers when installing countertops and sinks. A soapstone countertop is a popular item for homeowners searching for stylish and unique options for their kitchen. Strong, heat and stain resistant like granite, soapstone is also easy to install and priced to fit almost any renovation budget.

Soapstone countertops are easy to take clean and care for. The slabs used to construct the countertop are cut and fashioned to meet your specific kitchen dimensions. The best part about using soapstone as your kitchen renovation material is that it won’t harbor bacteria. This is because of its non-porous quality.

When undertaking a home improvement project, homeowners tend to choose soapstone countertops as their material of choice for kitchens and bathrooms. There are many reasons for this. First, soapstone is non porous, meaning liquids will simply sit on top of it rather than soak deep into the surface. Additionally, soapstone does not stain. The kitchen environment tends to go through a lot of abuse everyday during cooking and food preparation. This is a very important fact to keep in mind when choosing soapstone as your countertop material.

While soapstone has a limited color range, the stone itself is vibrant thanks to its many contrasts and where in the world it was quarried from. Untreated soapstone countertops tend to possess a solid light green or gray color. Once a coat of mineral oil is applied, the stone darkens to a shiny black.

Some varieties of soapstone have white veins, similar to those found in marble, running through it. This variety is typically softer and can be damaged much more easily. A soapstone countertop is best for homeowners adding a darker theme to their kitchen. It matches exceptionally great with stainless steel appliances once the mineral oil is applied.

The cost of soapstone countertops vary, especially since different companies sell different types of soapstone from all over the world. A higher quality soapstone slab can seem pricey, but considering it can last a lifetime, the price is well worth it.

Violet has worked on many home improvement projects using a soapstone countertops. Her specialties are redesigning ordinary homes into the extraordinary using soapstone for soapstone countertops.

Seamless Vinyl Siding is the Latest Development in Beautifying a Home While Adding Value

Published by Orlando Designer under Remodeling

When vinyl siding was in its infancy, the world took notice. We all saw just how much potential this idea could have; but unfortunately, the first siding was not much to look at. There were many kinks in the design, and overall it was relatively as cheap as it looked. It’s pretty ironic that today seamless vinyl siding is used to not only make homes look amazing, it’s used to turn a trailer home into the fortified look of a home, but in the beginning, siding tended to make a home look more like a trailer!

This was to be expected however, as all things evolve in time and get better. It took many years to reach the pinnacle of today’s success but vinyl siding has become, well, a household name, pun intended. The latest version out is called seamless vinyl siding.

Before we get into what seamless vinyl siding is exactly, keep in mind that these days, all siding on the market, with the exception of a few types, are incredibly cool. You can literally transform anything designed for people to live in, into something better using this material. Many trailer parks around the country are leaving people shocked by how much like a house they make the unit look. Manufactured homes, another name for a portable home that is a cross between a mobile home (old school) and a home (an actual home built with a foundation and immovable), are notorious for using vinyl siding to give it that immovable home look and feel. Often you can’t tell the difference!

Seamless vinyl siding is the latest trend. Unlike many siding choices out there where you literally piece the slabs together into a uniform section, seamless siding doesn’t show any seams. This relatively new type of siding is not as easy to install and should be professionally installed for best results. It is a bit more costly than it’s former models but puts off a more realistic look and feel. It is also manufactured with thicker buffering between the external piece and the home itself, giving it more strength and rigidity. This type of siding can be cut to fit just like its former self, but the difference shows. This type of siding improves the property value as well as the protection from the outside world. Many are even adding insulation behind the siding for even more savings on energy costs.

Patio Covers – Finding a Contractor to Build Your Deck Or Patio Cover

Published by Orlando Designer under Uncategorized

Choosing a patio cover scheme is a personal choice. If an architect designed your patio then the cover will most likely need a professional contractor’s touch. A remodeling contractor can help you decide on a patio cover suitable for your patio or deck and explain some of the products capable of surviving the extreme high desert climate.

The Desert

Places like Palmdale California experience severe summers and near constant Santa Ana Winds. The winters can be blistering cold and your patio cover will experience every extreme of those conditions month in and month out.

Before you call a professional contractor to help you build your patio cover, consider doing some research first. Think about the patio’s primary use, will the patio be used for entertaining?

Think about the Intended Use

For example, will he patio be a place to put your barbecue, a table and some chairs? Are you envisioning an enclosed or climate controlled patio design, or something that simply keeps the sun off your back as you enjoy a nice Mojave Desert summer evening? The possibilities are endless and it’s best to have an idea in your mind before accepting offers from prospective general contractors in your area.

Collecting Ideas

Another fantastic idea is to consult the internet and magazines for creative ideas. Design ideas are plentiful and available to you if you look hard enough.

Think about the Mojave Desert weather conditions. The sun and wind can quickly ravage any untreated or improperly treated patio cover.

Think about the Santa Ana winds. Something impervious will need to be built.  You the consumer should be armed with this kind of knowledge when consulting with a contractor.

Budget

Once you have an idea in mind, contemplate budget. Decent patio covers can range anywhere from a couple thousand dollars on up depending on the complexity of the project, materials used and quality contractor involved.

Having a Picture

One of the best pieces of advice that I can give is that a picture does speak a thousand words. If you can show a contractor an image of what you want, you’ll be fifteen steps ahead and closer to getting what you want.

Be it a page taken from a book or an image from the web this will save you big time.

Now delegate your efforts towards tweaking the details. No sense in wasting time, struggling to draw a mental model of what you desire and expecting the professional contractor gets it. Knowing that the professional contractor has a good idea of what you want brings good piece of mind. Also, you’ll get more realistic estimates in return.

Finally

Always, get a second estimate. Get three or four estimates if time allows for it.

Mural Decorating for Your Home

By adding a mural to a room, you can really create some interest and style. You can put a mural in all different types of rooms, anywhere from the kitchen to the bedroom. If you’re looking to add some design to a large area, this is a great approach. Here are some tips to help you use murals to decorate your home.

What Is a Mural?
When you paint or draw any type of design or picture directly on the wall, that is called a mural. Murals can be composed of anything, from a beach or ocean scene to a pattern of dots or stripes on the wall. In terms of application, murals can be painted on, drawn on, or even stuck on the wall.

Tips for Painting or Drawing a Mural on the Wall
Be sure to properly research your supplies first if you are going to attempt to paint or draw your own mural on the wall. You need to be sure you are using paint that’s suitable for murals. Also be sure it will go over whatever surface you’re painting on. If you really want to do your own mural but you’re not sure about your artistic abilities, there are a variety of stencils and kits that offer pictures you can blow up and trace on the wall available at most home décor and arts and crafts stores. Most people are not going to be able to freehand a large mural, so a stencil can really be a good decision.

Sticking Your Mural on the Wall
If painting and drawing really aren’t your thing, you always have to option of using wall decals or wallpaper murals. You pretty much just have to hang these murals on the wall, but they look just like real painted-on murals. For wallpaper murals, all you need is glue and water, as they are hung just like regular wallpaper. Decals, on the other hand, come with an adhesive already on the back of them and tend to be more like stickers.

Hire a Professional to Make Your Mural
If you’re not working off a tight budget, you might want to consider hiring a professional artist to create your mural. This is a great option, particularly if you have a very large mural you want done or if you’re not artistic at all. Just be aware that this approach can quickly get expensive, particularly if the mural ends up being large and intricate. Some murals can take a few days. It all depends on just how detailed they are and how large the space is. Thus, be sure that you budget accordingly.

Where to Add Murals in Your Home
Just about any room in your home will benefit from the addition of a mural. Consider, for instance, adding a great nursery mural for a new little one. Or if you can’t decide what to do with that big empty wall in your dining room, consider adding a mural that will fit the style of the room. Bathrooms and kitchens are also great places to put murals. A wall mural doesn’t necessarily need to be huge, nor does it need to be the only thing on the wall, but you do want to be sure it’s highlighted in the room.

Happily, you don’t have to be artistic in order to add a mural to your home’s décor. You can always go the wallpaper or decal route or even hire a professional artist instead. Not only do murals add some design style to a room, but they are a great way to let your personality shine through your home’s décor.

Solar Deck Lights

Published by Orlando Designer under Lighting

A lot of folks are choosing to spend more time outdoors enjoying time on there decks, and at night they’re in need of some kind of lighting. This night time light may be rendered by solar deck lights. These kind of lights comes in numerous colors and styles, such as the post light, the flush mounted lights or string lights. We’ll talk about the advantages and disadvantages from all along with a few of the out standing characteristics of each.

Solar post lights or railing lights use fixtures that are affixed on the top of the post or on the railing and furnish the primary light for your deck at night. Solar lights as a whole normally furnish a less bright or not as glaring a light as a regular light, which works out truly fine for illuminating your deck because you need adequate light to be capable of seeing just not so bright that it takes away from relishing the time spent upon your deck at night. These lights are simple to set up they just fit on the top of the post and are secured in place by a few screws.

Recessed or level mounted lights are good for outlining a footpath or guiding in a definite direction. When they’re installed they may be walked upon or even driven across therefore they work out good for running along a path or driveway. They likewise work really good for supplying a bit more light for hard to see steps making them a bit less hazardous at night. To install them you have to bore a hole for them to sit down in, but that’s nearly all that needs to be done.

Solar string lights are merely a strand of small-scale lights nearly equal to a string of Christmas lights. A lot of homeowners like to outline their decks with this type of lights bringing about a kind of twinkling aspect. You could mount them simply like you would any string of lights, either hanging by little hooks or draped about the rail. The sole deviation being that on the end of the strand rather than an electrical plug you’ll see a little box with a solar panel which must be affixed where it will get sunshine of a daytime. There is as well what is known as rope lighting which is essentially the same thing except that the entire strand of lights are sheathed in clear pliable tubing which makes them more weatherproof and harder to get tangled.

That wraps up most of the types of solar lighting that would be used to brighten your deck of a nighttime. Exactly like all solar lights they must be exposed to sunshine of a daytime, but when they’re installed there are no cables to be ran merely allow them to charge up of a daytime and enjoy the light of a nighttime.
