Swimming pools are a wonderful addition to any home. They create an instant place for fun, relaxation, and exercise. Plus, water is extremely beneficial in any landscape. However, in feng shui, swimming pools can often create negative influence. That’s because swimming pools possess a great deal of energy in feng shui terms. It is also because swimming pools are often located at the rear of the home, and that is extremely inauspicious according to feng shui.

Even so, there are some instances when pools are a benefit to the homeowner. This would include a pool that is correctly sized, shaped, and positioned. In feng shui, certain pool shapes and sizes can create problems, such as poison arrows, which are harsh points of energy directed at the house.

On the plus side, pools positioned in certain locations can actually benefit homeowners. These are pools that are placed according to flying star feng shui. At their best, pools can be positioned to tap the “wealth star” — the secret location of prosperity that is tied to the direction of the front door. Another benefit of flying star placement is to overcome negative energies, as pools can offset negative energy from poor star placements.

Look at placing your pool in an auspicious location and follow feng shui’s design criteria to make sure your pool gives you great feng shui! Positioned right, swimming pools can add tremendous wealth luck to a home! If not, though, it can be a very negative influence that can harm your wealth. To be sure about your pool, though, consider checking in with a feng shui consultant.

The Top 6 Feng Shui Pool Rules

1. Select a shape that is auspicious.

The best shapes for pools are round, oval, kidney, or curving. This is because none of these shapes have any hard edges or points that can create a poison arrow effect that square-shaped pools often do. Other good choices include octagons and figure-eights.

2. Keep your pool size proportional to the size of the home.

Pools are better if they are not overly large. If they are too large for the home, they can “overwhelm” it, imparting much negative energy. Better to go with a smaller pool than one that is too large.

3. Place pools at the sides of the yard.

If possible, it is better to position swimming pools at the side of a yard rather than directly in the rear. If that can’t be accommodated, then do try to avoid having a pool that is directly in line with the rear center of the house. Pools that do can become menacing, as water behind you is considered bad feng shui.

4. Pools that embrace a home bring good luck.

These pools appear to wrap around a home or curve toward the home. These are a good design choice as they don’t have hard edges pointing at the house.

5. Locate pools in a favorable sector for feng shui periods 8 and 9.

Until 2043, pools should ideally be located in the North, Southwest, East, or Southeast sectors.

6. Incorporate the five elements around your pool.

Pools should be mixed with the other elements, such as metal (handrailings, pumps, electrical equipment), wood (plants, arbors, gazebos), earth (rock, cement surroundings or deckings), and fire (lighting). This helps to ensure that the pool is well-balanced and harmoniously incorporated into the landscape.

Besides buying an arts and crafts bed for your bedroom or an elegant wood bookshelf for your home office, simply painting a room can easily freshen it up, giving it an instant new look. Yet many homeowners dread interior painting. Fortunately, if you know what you’re doing and how to paint in the most efficient manner, painting the inside of your home isn’t that difficult. Following are some basic interior painting tips that will help make your next painting project run much more smoothly.

1. Avoid trying to prep the area and get it painted all in one day.
Trying to cram everything in will only leave you feeling rushed, which in the end can lead to a bad paint job. It’s a better idea to set aside a separate day when you can do all the prep work for painting. For seldom-used rooms, this can even be done a few days ahead. To prepare a room for painting, you need to focus on taping the walls, laying any drop cloths, moving the furniture out of the way, and gathering all the painting supplies in the room.

2. Don’t try to paint over damaged walls.
Before starting any painting project, you need to look over the walls and fix any cracks or holes there may be. Any cracks and holes you find can be easily fixed with a drywall kit and some sandpaper. Be sure to do this at least a day before you paint. That way the drywall plaster will have some time to dry and you’ll have time to sand down the area as well.

3. Choose the best brushes for the paint job.
Natural bristled brushes always work best for oil-based paints. On the other hand, for water-based or latex paint, synthetic bristled brushes are best, as they will give you an even coat. Foam rollers are the most efficient way to paint a larger space. For trim and windows, though, you’ll need smaller brushes.

4. Always use a primer to achieve a more professional look.
A primer will make the paint go on a lot more smoothly. Furthermore, it also helps you avoid any possible tainting from the previous wall color. You can even have your primer tinted to match your base coat color. This will often allow you to avoid having to put a second coat of paint on the walls.

5. Be sure to use painter’s blue tape for any areas that you don’t want to get paint on, such as doorway frames, trim, and windows.

When this tape is applied to a smooth surface, it won’t let the paint seep through to the areas underneath. After the paint dries, simply remove the tape. The nice thing is, you don’t have to worry about any of the paint coming off with it.

6. Have plenty of old rags for any mistakes that may happen.
It is an unavoidable part of painting that you will drop some paint on the trim or hit something with a brush that you shouldn’t.

7. Use even strokes when painting to get an even coat.
It’s essential to have plenty of natural light in the room so you can see where you are painting and also find any areas you might have missed.

8. Be sure to keep any leftover paint for future touch-ups or fixes.
If you don’t have the space to store a large paint can that only has a small amount of paint, then pour the leftover paint into a glass jar with a tight lid and store it that way. The jar then needs to be labeled with the exact color of the paint, the date, and the room you used it in.

Interior painting projects are never as scary as they seem. Simply follow these easy tips. In no time at all, you’ll be well on your way to changing the décor of your home.

1.Color and design are critical.

Paint bedrooms with calm, soothing colors. Good color choices for bedrooms are skin colors: yellows, browns, taupes, pinks, or beige. Avoid blue or dark-colored ceilings, wallpaper with plants or flowers (a feng-shui no-no for bedrooms), actual plants or flowers in the bedroom, or water elements, such as fish, lakes, or water.

2.The bed is where it’s at.

Make sure the bed is at the widest part of the room and the door to the room can be seen from the bed. This is a critical feng shui element. Bed placement is extremely important especially if the bed is placed on the same wall as the bedroom door. This will bring serious disagreements for the couple.

The bed should also not face a bathroom, see a toilet, share the same wall as a toilet, or be directly opposite a door. It’s also best if the bed doesn’t face a closet or bookshelves of some kind.

Also, be sure to give yourself some support. Beds that have the headboard to a window give little support. If this is the best (or only) position for the bed, place a wooden screen between the bed and the window to simulate a wall or hang heavy drapes that can be closed at night.

Headboards are best if they are solid. Iron bars can create headaches and lack of support. Lastly, don’t go out without making your bed. Really, now, how hard is it to make a bed?

3.Look Up.

Got a ceiling fan whirring above your bed? Lots of us do. This could be cooling you down… literally and romantically. Ceiling fans above the bed disrupt your body’s chi (energy) — and your romantic chi. You also might avoid turning on the fan for a week and see what happens… who knows? If you are trying to conceive, turn the fan off altogether.

4.Look down.

If there’s junk piled under the bed, remove it. Store soft items such as winter clothes, blankets, or pillows, if you just have to. Be absolutely sure there are no dangerous items such as guns, knives, or other harsh instruments under the bed. These harm your health, your romance, and your sleep.

5.Remove reflections.

Mirrors and televisions should not be in the bedroom — or any reflective surfaces. This creates disruptive chi in the bedroom that harms sleep — or creates divorces.

6.Decorate sparingly.

Decorating the room correctly is important. Look at all the elements here to get more ideas about appropriate decorating for your romantic retreat.

Absolutely no plants, water, and flowers in the bedroom. Take all plants, flowers, and water features out of the bedroom. Water and plants can drown the energy in a bedroom. Even pictures featuring water, ice, or snow are poor bedroom decorating choices.

Flowers give off too much male (yang) energy, also making a poor choice for a restful bedroom. Dried flowers should be removed as they are dead energy. Seeing or hearing water from the bed (view of the bathroom, maybe?) can create financial problems and sinus/respirator problems.

7. Remove objects of work.

These can be treadmills or other exercise equipment, desks, computers, bookshelves filled with work-related books, or objects that remind either of you of something to do. Even hobbies and projects are not good choices for your love nest.

8. Keep it clean.

The bedroom is the place where you restore yourself after a long day. It should be clean and neat. Make sure it is cleaned regularly, or you can expect problems with health or finances. This also includes closets in your bedroom. Make sure they are neat and that you can find what you are looking for quickly.

Lastly, make needed repairs. Ask yourself if your room is in good working order? Is the carpet coming up or do the windows stick? Your room must function well on all levels. This includes making sure the door opens and closes correctly – and locks, too! Oil creaky door hinges.

There are age long secrets to successfully doing it yourself. One of the secrets is knowing the right tool for the job. Another secret is knowing how to do it. All of a sudden, you find yourself tackling projects you use to pay someone else to do. For instance, for installing lockset and dead bolt, you will need the following: masking tape; a hammer; tape measure; flat- head screwdriver; a 1- inch spade bit; pilot drill bits for all screws; a power drill; and a 2 1/8- inch hole screw.

After you have gotten the right tools, it is time to start work. Plan to spend about one hour to complete the installation. Follow this step- by- step guide and you will know how to install locksets and dead bolts like a pro.

Step 1. Position The Template: Most doorknobs are 34 to 38 inches high, with dead bolts 6 to 12 inches above that. Decide for yourself what height is preferable. When drilling new holes, tape the producer’s template in place with the lockset centerline at the desired height. Determine the backset – the distance from the door edge to the centerline – and use the corresponding template marks. The backset can be 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inches; many locksets accommodate both. Then drill 1/8- inch pilot hole through the door edge, use the template to drill a 2- inch- deep pilot holes through the door to center of the 2 1/8- inch hole saw. At the door edge, use the template to drill a 2- inch deep hole for the strike or bolt.

Step 2. Drill The Door Face And Mark The Jamb: Using drill with a bubble level or a torpedo level taped on top, drill halfway through the door from each side with the hole saw to prevent blowout sintering. Then mark the doorjamb for the strike plate by closing the door, inserting a nail from inside of the 2 1/8 inch hole through the strike pilot hole and pushing it into the jamb.

Step 3. Drill The Jamb And Door Edge: With the nail mark as an indicator, drill a 5/8- inch- deep hole for the strike or a 1- inch spade bit. In the door edge, use the pilot hole to guide a 1- inch spade and drill through to the large hole where the cylinder will sit.

Step 4. Chisel The Jamb And Door Edge: Hold the latchet assembly up to the door edge and score its outline deeply with utility knife. Do the same for the strike plate on the doorjamb. then score the wood to be removed at 1/4- inch intervals with a chisel, removing enough wood so the strike box sits flush with the door edge and the strike plate sits flush with the doorjamb.

You want to really cap off the look of your home because for some reason, you just feel like something is missing. Well, there is actually a pretty easy way to put a nice decorative finishing touch on your space and that is with glass doorknobs. They have a lovely appearance and will be sure to make an eye-catching statement.

With glass doorknobs, you might not think it, but there are actually a lot of eye-catching options to choose from. For example, you can get one that has a smooth round shape, another one that has a rosette shape to it, and there is even one that has a unique swirling type design. Along with the different shapes, they can come in different colors as well to simple clear ones, vibrant red colored ones, and many others including ones that are lavender, green, and even pink.

Now, if you’re not into glass doorknobs, but still think these fixtures would be a good way to finish off the look of your space, you’re in luck. You see, there are many other material options that they can be crafted from as well. For instance, you can get ones made from different types of metal that have many eye-catching finishes. Like, you can get one that is crafted out of bronze that has an oil rubbed finish or you can get one made from steel that has a brushed, even polished finish. Along with the metal, you can also get ones made from wood, others made from hard plastic, and there are even ones that are crafted out of porcelain that are adorned with beautiful hand painted designs.

To easily check out all the ones that you can get, along with the other choices as well, forget about making a trip to the local hardware store. Instead, just jump on the Internet and do some comparison shopping. You can breeze through all the online stores and their selections in no time at all. Plus, when you do come across something you like, it generally is at the best prices possible and it will get shipped right to your home. Shopping has never been so easy because you don’t even have to leave your home to do it.

One of the main things to keep in mind with glass doorknobs is the fact they are best for using inside your home, like on a closet door or bedroom door. You see, they are sturdy, but not sturdy enough to withstand the outdoor elements. So, if they are left outside, they will most likely break causing a big mess and you could even hurt yourself by cutting yourself on the glass. Therefore, as a rule of thumb, just use for inside your home.

So, if you want a decorative way to finish off the look of your space, a great way to do it is with glass doorknobs. They have a gorgeous appearance and are a sure fire way to give your space a lovely, completed appearance.

Sliding Door System – Back To Basics

Due to the traditional options of doors to which most people are exposed to, too few people elect for a sliding door system. However, when talking about this system of doors, the first question that may come to your mind is “what is a sliding door” due to unfamiliarity of the subject?

The sliding doors system is not really a new concept, however it is innovative. The Roman houses, specifically in the buried city of Pompeii in Italy, have evidently made use of the system as their main choice of doors. These are usually suspended or mounted on columns or panels of stone construction. So instead of its earlier counterparts, which are by the way made of large boulders of rocks that move sideways, the Romans have innovated a type of door that works in similar fashion although a mounting was used to guide the door into a specific direction – more like digging a straight canal into the underlying construction as a guide for direction.

Contemporary systems, however, are more sophisticated. Using wood, metal or vinyl tracks, the doors are now fitted to a frame allowing the rolling or sliding motion at the top and the bottom of the track. Usually, rollers are used for ease of movement. These could be adjusted for ease of use. In most cases, the rollers are connected on both the top and bottom areas of the track but there are systems that make use only of the bottom part of the track due to structural concerns.

For example, heavier doors as a rule glide on rollers attached to the bottom track while lighter doors are hung from the top.

To secure the doors, a number of catches are used. The type to be used in a specific system depends largely on the manufacturer and the material utilized for the construction.

The most common type of material used for modern system is wood. In the past decades however, aluminum sliders were common. But due to their stark appearance and other infamous qualities, the popularity of these doors has declined. Nonetheless, they remain as a staple in the market.

The sliding door system has evolved from primitive to modern. With the continuous development in the home building industries, the system is expected to meet newer versions that would break the ordinary image of doors. The newest developments, in fact, include those types that are no longer dominated by single-panel doors.

Spiritual Housecleaning 101

You’ve probably heard the term ‘spiritual housecleaning,’ and wondered what in the world they were talking about. As if a regular housecleaning isn’t enough, right? Well, a spiritual housecleaning can be very beneficial. This was utilized by American Indians, as a way to get rid of unwanted ‘negativity.’ They used incense and herbs to perform spiritual house cleanings, and to promote positive influences in their homes.

A popular herb used by the American Indians is Sage. This is called ‘Smudging.’ Usually the dried leaves are bundled together and tied, and form a sort of sage ‘wand,’ or stick. These were then lit and smoldered like incense, and carried through the entire living area. The smoke from the sage is used cleanse the area of negative influences. Often, after doing this, they would use the herb Sweetgrass to go through and promote positive influences. These were often accompanied by prayers and blessings, and visualizations.

This is still an extremely utilized thing today, among American Indians, and in nature based and peaceful religions such as Paganism or Wicca. They believe that a home’s energy can become disturbed with negativity, just as people can. For example, if something terrible happens in a home, the negative imprint stays in the home. The same thing with positive things. They use tools to ‘cleanse’ the home of negativity.

Here is how they usually go about ‘cleaning’ a home. Some herbs that are most commonly used are: Sage, Sweetgrass, Agrimony, Angelica, Basil, Frankincense and Myrrh. Usually, the person will carry the burning herbs (on a heat-proof censer) through the rooms of the house, and ‘visualize’ any bad or negative energy leaving, or being cleaned with the smoke from the herbs. They will usually accompany this with prayers, asking their God to take away any negativity. They will go throughout the entire house, in every room and repeat the visualizations or prayers.

People of all religions utilize this type of ‘spiritual housecleaning,’ as the benefits are great. People report that their homes ‘feel lighter,’ and more safe. Another way to do this is to sprinkle the herbs around the windows and doors and wherever you think there may be negativity. Some people believe that the visualizing alone will do the trick, as the ‘law of attraction’ says that whatever you visualize will become a reality. This is a popular belief, and even celebrities, professional athletes, and millionaires claim to use visualization and energetic herbs to receive things they desire.

If you decide to perform a spiritual housecleaning, and want to use herbs to do so, please research them carefully, as some herbs can be toxic, especially when they are burned inside of your home. A Spiritual Housecleaning is a good and positive thing, now if we could only get these herbs to do the dishes for us!

The majority of entrepreneurs that work from home can remember the days when their home office was brand new. It all looked so professional with the newly bought equipment and furniture. There was very little clutter or mess. Several months later, we look around to find areas crowded with stacks of papers, disks and files from our daily work; it doesn’t look so tidy or professional anymore.

To work properly it’s not only important to have your office organized but also to have plenty of space in the office itself. Having room to work will help keep you motivated and inspired to complete your daily tasks. It helps you stay focused on what you’re doing instead of becoming annoyed at all the clutter around you. Here’s a few tips to keep your home office spacious and functional.

1. Get rid of all the clutter. Anything that doesn’t serve a purpose or is required for your day-to-day work has to go. Old memos or drafts of work past their sell by date? Get rid of them. Any paperwork that’s not needed gets sent to recycling. Simple.

2. Mounted cabinets are a great way to tidily store office items. A medium or large sized cabinet will hold more stuff and keep papers from piling up into small mountains on the floor and your desk. Having them wall mounted means your floorspace isn’t eaten up by yet more office furniture.

3. Non-work items. Look at your desk. How many of those items are actually required for your work and how many are just useless accessories that got left there over time? Get rid of the items that don’t serve a purpose.

4. Your desk shape plays a huge part here. Having a desk in the shape or a U or L will give you more room because you can sit “into” the shape of the desk giving you more room than you might imagine. Use the small drawers of the desk to store additional office supplies like pens, staplers, stamps and so forth.

5. Tidy up the wiring. If you’re using a computer and a phone there’s going to be wires hanging all over the place behind or underneath your desk. Not only does this look bad but it can be dangerous – people can trip over these things. My dog loves getting herself caught up in any loose wiring and trying to drag computer equipment off my desk.

6. How much light is in the room is also important. Good lighting will make any office appear more spacious. Always let in as much natural light as possible. In the evenings have plenty of floor or desk lamps to make sure you’re not sitting in the almost black of night while you’re trying to work.

7. Shelving can also be very handy. One or two large shelves in your home office will give you space for printers, fax machines and files. I personally keep my printer on a shelf away from the desk. Why? Because it eats up too much space and I can still reach it from where I sit.

Using any of the above tips will give you more space in your home office. That space allows you to mentally and physically breathe in that room and get the most out of each working day. You owe it to yourself and your business to do this.

Stuck in a cramped, messy home office. You never saw this coming did you? You can fix this problem today by following some office space design guidelines that will help you reclaim your home office. Learn more about home office design ideas at HomeOfficeBuddy dot com.

During disasters, such as flood and fire, mold can destroy the houses
completely. The molds are found growing in damp and dark places of homes. The
growth of the mold proves harmful not only for family but for your dwelling
place too.

It has been seen that a few species of molds are harmless but some of them
might act as venom for the members of your family. For individuals who are
suffering from some kind of allergy, mold can further aggravate their condition.

A wide array of reasons can cause the growth of the mold; some of the reasons
comprise water leakage, floods and high levels of humidity. In case a person
notices mildewed stench at his dwelling or some member of the family is
suffering from mold toxin symptoms of allergy and sinus then presence of mold
should be checked.

Mold belongs to the fungi animal kingdom and as any other fungi feed on dead
and decaying matter to obtain their nutrients. This feeding process is called
fermentation which leads to the release of organic compounds in the air. These
organic compounds results in mildewed stench that is often associated with mold
toxin symptom, such as allergic reactions, which are inhaled by the organisms.
This mold toxin induces symptoms that comprise headaches, dizziness and fever.

To prevent mold it is necessary to take professional help because mold
releases mold spores that can intensify health problems. Proper knowledge and
methods are very essential in order to prevent mold.

For the growth of mold spores into spores, it requires nutrients, time and
moisture. Cellulose aids in the growth of mold spores into molds. The growth of
mold begins from 22 hours to 10 days with the aid of enhancing conditions. The
moisture plays a crucial role in commencing the process of decay.

Proper ventilation and lack of humidity in houses can act as mold preventers.
The stirring wind acts as a mold preventers as it has effect of dehydrating by
reducing the humidity.

For killing or ceasing the growth of mold spores, it is essential to take steps
for the prevention of mold from spreading from one area to other in the house.
The dust should be minimized while cleaning or killing the mold spores, as it
enhances the growth by stirring it. Dust in the air serves as a chief means of
mold spores transportation.

The mold and the materials infested with molds should be properly and discarded
into plastic bags that are heavy duty. But for preventing the mold growth, the
bags should not be transported from one area to the other. This will avoid
regeneration and scattering of mold. For cleaning or killing the mold, the rooms
should be cleaned separately.

After removing the moisture, clean the mold by applying soap for removing the
molds followed by a disinfectant for killing the mold spores. The surface should
be cleaned properly as the mold spores are very minute and can spread easily
through the environment.

One of the most important pieces of a home theater is the sound system. A good sound system can greatly enhance your movie watching experience and a good home sound system can replicate the movie-theater sound effects on a smaller scale.

When installing a sound system in your home theater, you need to think about the size and shape of the room as well as where the viewers will be seated. Placing the speakers – especially the center speaker, in the optimum position for every seat in the house will ensure a good movie experience for everyone!

Here’s some things to think about when choosing and installing the sound system for your home theater:

1. A good home theater should have at least five speakers. You should have three in the front positioned at the right of the viewers, the left and the center. There are two surrounds also which are generally in the back on either side. If you really want super duper realistic sounds, you can add more but five will do the trick on a budget.

2. The center speaker is the key speaker and the best location for it is either on top of the television itself, in the center, or just below it. Some televisions will allow for placement behind the screen as well, as is the case with some projection set ups.

3. When placing your center speaker, remember that the tweeter is in an optimum position when it is at ear level for the viewers. If the speaker is mounted on top or below the screen, line up the front with the television’s front for best sound quality and aim the speaker at the seating area. Try to keep the center speaker an equal distance from the listening position as the left and right speakers.

4. Set a realistic budget for your sound system before you go out shopping. Remember, a really top notch system can cost a lot so be sure to set an honest yet reasonable amount for the purchase limit and remember good is often more than sufficient.

5. Don’t just buy the first system you come across. Sure, you want to have your new sound system installed today, but it can pay to shop around. Compare the available options within your budget. Read reviews from consumer groups and even past customers. Find out which sound systems offer great clarity and hold up well, too.

6. Once you’ve listened to a few different systems within your price range, pick the system that is right for you. This means the one you like that is in your price range. Then make sure it’s installed correctly. Make sure speaker placement is right for sound optimization. Surround sound doesn’t work so well if the speakers are all lined up in a row without rhyme or reason.

7. You can have the system installed by a professional or do it yourself, but either way you need to think about safety and take care to hide wires for the speakers under carpets or run them professionally through the walls. There’s nothing worse than tripping on a speaker wire and yanking it out to mess up the system, not to mention that exposed wires don’t look that great. If you hate dealing with wires – consider going with wireless speakers.

Creating a great sound system for your home theater doesn’t have to be a huge and costly venture either. But it is an investment that makes all the difference in the world.
