The Care and Feeding of Your Disposer

Simple tips to extend the life of your food waste disposer


There are a few misconceptions about disposers. First, they are not “Garbage Disposers”. They are “Food Waste Disposers”. You would be surprised at what we sometimes find in the disposer which prevents it from working. For some reason we find a lot of rocks in disposers. If you have a fish bowl, please wash it in another sink.


One of the most common items we find during a home inspection is a failed or failing disposer. It is one of the most over-looked, and under-appreciated appliances that we use.


These are the most common defects:


  • Damaged or worn rubber strainer
  • Rust at the cutting plates
  • Rust at the mounting flange
  • Rust at the body of the disposer


The rubber strainer is a safety item. It prevents items such as a fork or knife from falling into the disposer, or worse being eject from the disposer. The rubber strainer is a replaceable item that should be in good working order. If this reminds you of your disposer, you should consider having it replaced. A worn strainer could actually be dangerous. When the plate is spinning, a utensil could fall into and be ejected from the disposer causing injury.


The cutting plate is the part you see if you look into the disposer. It is a spinning plate with blades on it. When the disposer is turned on, the spinning motion causes the food to be thrown the sides of the disposer where the blades chop it into pieces small enough to be washed away. It is important that you clear the disposer after washing dishes by running it. If you fail to do so, the food debris will sit on the plate. This trapped moisture will eventually rust the plate, and damage the disposer. Always run the disposer after washing dishes to extend the life of the unit, and reduce the odor from the disposer. Also, look at the plate periodically. If you see heavy rusting of the plate, or the sides of the disposer, it may be time to replace the unit.


Rust at the mounting flange can be caused by a poor installation or a torn washer or strainer. Water is actually leaking from the sink to the outside of the disposer. A rust mounting flange can eventually fall apart, and becomes difficult to remove when you need to replace the disposer. When the body of the disposer is rusted, you need to replace the disposer. If it isn’t already leaking, it will shortly. Check that the rust isn’t coming from another source, but most often the disposer is at the end of its useful life.


Cleaning


Everybody has had a disposer that smells. It is really unpleasant. Often people will put a wedge of lemon down the disposer to mask the odor. We recommend against this. The lemon rind is too tough for the disposer to deal with, and you can actually damage the blades. The smell is caused by old food debris that is stuck to the inside of the disposer. The best thing to do is to use a still brush to clean the inside of the neck of the disposer. Use a disinfectant, and really scrub the inside. You’ll notice an immediate improvement.

Now, to understand what an open ground, or an electrical connection that isn’t grounded. This is a situation where a three pronged outlet has only two, a hot and neutral wire, and no ground wire. Though these outlets look upgraded, they are not grounded and are disadvantageous for some reasons.


First of all, they are a shock and safety hazard to your family. Shocks from these outlets can not only cause injury or death, but are also hazardous to any equipment you plug into them.


Secondly, most appliances like refrigerator, dishwasher, television and practically any equipment using a 3 pronged plug need grounded outlets for safety and warranty reasons. Tips to ensure your outlet is grounded


Plug-in testers are quite reliable in finding this out. They are small and inexpensive, and easily available at electrical supply stores.


You could always cut the electricity at the breaker, and pull off your outlet cover to take a look at its wiring. As this may be difficult to do as you may have to unscrew and pull out the outlet, it is better to have a professional do this for you.


So instead of taking chances, and if you have doubts about the wiring of your house, get a qualified electrician take a look at it.


How to take care of outlets that are not properly grounded


If you find a negative reading on your tester, remember that there may be other outlets in your house that are also not grounded. So it’s better to hire a qualified electrician to do a thorough checkup, and take the recommended steps.


Another option you have includes using new wiring. However as its installation requires the use of a code with specific requirements, and language that has to be shown on the outlet cover, this is not recommended as a beginner’s DIY project. It is too dangerous to you, your family and your electrical appliances; and should only be done by a professional, if at all necessary.

What is Chi? Feng Shui

One question which bugs me is…. what is chi?


It’s been bugging me for about a decade and fathoming its depths can be a lifelong study. And damn frustrating and exasperating. OK, I could just jump into the books and accept what had been written about chi energy. That will get me by but do I really understand what it represents?


To me, chi is life. The ancient Chinese described it as “life-force” and for good reason. Chi permeates everything and links the parts of our surroundings together. The Tai Chi practitioner and Acupuncturist understand chi energy. They likened it to the flow of energy around and through the body, linking each part forming a cohesive and functioning unit. By understanding its rhythm and flow they can guide exercises and treatments to give us stability and longevity.


Both good aims and no doubt chi moves through our surroundings in much the same way, a conduit to thread energy along and direct to wherever it belongs. Chi takes many forms and energy is present in everything.


If we accept that scenario, chi takes on a new meaning. Suggesting we can understand, guide and harness it to create places and surroundings of beneficial chi flow where it can accumulate and be absorbed by ourselves and any other creature who comes into its presence. We can strengthen its weaknesses and build places where it is comfortable. Wow, now that is something worthwhile. Why not choose the garden as a potential source of chi flow and accumulation?


One thing I find searching for the secret life of chi is chi is present in all things and expressed in the energy each omits and receives. Even a humble stone has chi energy but accepting a stone has chi can become rather complicated. A stone receives energy in its making and is retained, released gradually as it changes from one form to another. You can feel its energy but a stone is something of stability and certainty, a base for life to begin and be preserved. There’s something very Yin in a stone.


Life to me is more simplified and expressed in the movement of birds and insects, the branches of a tree rustling in a breeze or the waves rolling into the shore at my feet. We are accompanied by chi and its presence obscure until our ”chi eyes” develop and view our surroundings as compositions of all things.


Nature present and provider and we passengers in time and there not to abuse and plunder as we seem to specialise in but as beings able to observe, accept and encourage interaction between all things.


Chi remains that mysterious being, and that’s probably best. Maybe it should keep some of its secrets from us human beings and instead we just taking a little part of it for our sustenance, pleasure and enjoyment.

3. Remember to choose appropriate colors for your bedroom.
Color theory indicates that different hues have different effects on people. The cool colors that reside on the left side of the color wheel provide a sense of calm. Pick one of these colors for the bedroom, avoiding any of those bright, loud colors that are more exciting than soothing.

4. Eliminate excess noise.
Make sure that rooms adjacent to the bedroom are not home to stereos, televisions or other noisy electronics. Most modern homes aren’t built with soundproof walls, and the resulting noise that can penetrate your room can keep you up at night.

5. Don’t forget to block the light.

Loud pipes might be waking everyone in the house when one person makes a bathroom visit in the middle of the night. Look for the cause of any clanging and banging, particularly in a bathroom that is adjacent to a bedroom.

8. Be sure to seal your windows and doors.
Keep drafts and annoying rattles out of the bedroom by making sure all your doors and windows are solid and secure.

9. Keep the air in your bedroom clean.
Place an air purifier or humidifier in your room to keep the air quality at its best. Allergens and excessively dry air can easily disrupt your sleep. They also make waking up extremely unpleasant. Many of these machines also produce white noise, which will conveniently drown out other distracting sounds.

10. Finally, it’s time to get organized.
Sort through your closets and find homes for your clothing and other personal items. A chaotic, messy room can be very stressful. LED TV Bracket – Understanding LED TVs

The television market continually changes. This year has brought the release of the first 3D televisions on sale. This is shortly after the release of LED technology for televisions. Before discussing the available LED TV bracket and LED TV wall bracket choices one must first understand the LED television. What is it and what makes it different from your typical LCD television?


LED is a type of light which has been around for several years. The light bulb has a longer life than your typical light. The first thing we saw light emitting diodes with was Christmas lights. Samsung, Panasonic, Philips, Toshiba, LG, ProScan, and Vizio have all decided to offer LED TVs. The technology has replaced the traditional fluorescent light found in LCD televisions. LEDs have two forms: a Dynamic RGB and a White Edge LED. The RGB method provides truer colours like black, white and primary colours. It has a higher dynamic and costs less. The Edge LEDs have a diffused light across the entire screen sharpening the backlight, but also causing a dimming of the picture.


As you might have guessed by now the LED technology is nothing new. The use in televisions was new and it rose in popularity rather quickly. The reason they became so popular was because most understood the LED light would last longer than fluorescent light for the backlighting. They figured it was better technology and therefore worthy of spending a little more. The downside in the popularity of LCD televisions is that the off angle viewing is poor. Even offering LED with the LCD technology has not changed this. However, LCD is still better than the plasma design because it is based off of light rather than a plasma creation which has a half life.


At the moment the LED technology has not quite reached its potential, but for those who follow the electronic industry this has not made them less popular. In 2010 more models have been released in small screen sizes. LG has over four models you can purchase as do many of the aforementioned producers of LED technology.


Now that you have an understanding of what LED televisions are and that they are being sought by the public you can look at the LED TV bracket and LED TV wall bracket available for these televisions. As a flat panel screen this TV can be tipped over and damaged if it is not correctly mounted to a wall with the TV bracket.

The second choice you have is the ultra slim bracket. The ultra slim bracket comes in two ranges: 26 to 32 inches and 37 to 65 inches. They were created for this range because up until 2010 small sized LED TVs were not being manufactured. Now you have some companies offering below 30 inches.


The ultra slim bracket is not like your typical LCD television bracket. It offers four screws for the smaller size screens, but it is in a horizontal position rather than a square. There are two silver brackets for screws and then two black brackets. You can manipulate the size a little bit on the ultra slim bracket. It is not a huge metal bracket, which makes it lighter and to some degree easier to install.


For those who require an LED TV bracket the ultra slim can be the most attractive. It will be a little more than the regular LED TV bracket which is designed like most LCD brackets. The good attribute of LED TV bracket options like the ultra slim is that it can make the TV almost flush with the wall like a picture frame.
