Your bedroom should be a calm and peaceful place where you can escape from the daily bustle and pressure of the outside world. However, it seems that all too often the stresses of the day work their way into the spaces where we are meant to be the most relaxed. Such intrusions contribute to insomnia, which can lead to major health difficulties. Luckily, it is surprisingly simple to remove those unwanted distractions from your bedroom so that your sleep can come easier.
Get rid of those late-night problems by remaking your bedroom into a safe, peaceful place to relax and sleep. Start with these 10 simple ideas:
1. Get the television out of the bedroom.
Move the television from your bedroom, and place it in an entertainment center in the family room or living room. Watching TV in bed inhibits good sleep.
2. It’s time to move the computer.
As with the television, it’s time to find a new home for your computer in a home office or at least in a corner in your family room or den. Remove the stress and worry of your work from the place where your focus should be relaxing and sleeping.
3. Remember to choose appropriate colors for your bedroom.
Color theory indicates that different hues have different effects on people. The cool colors that reside on the left side of the color wheel provide a sense of calm. Pick one of these colors for the bedroom, avoiding any of those bright, loud colors that are more exciting than soothing.
4. Eliminate excess noise.
Make sure that rooms adjacent to the bedroom are not home to stereos, televisions or other noisy electronics. Most modern homes aren’t built with soundproof walls, and the resulting noise that can penetrate your room can keep you up at night.
5. Don’t forget to block the light.
Select light-blocking window treatments. Even when there’s no sun, plenty of light from the outside can find its way into the bedroom, disturbing your sleep patterns. Keep your room as dark as possible, especially those of you whose work schedule necessitates sleeping during the day.
6. Add a little light.
For those of you who need a little light to sleep comfortably, it’s a good idea to add a few nightlights or a dimmer switch to the room, rather than sleeping with a bright lamp on.
7. It’s also a good idea to check your pipes.
Loud pipes might be waking everyone in the house when one person makes a bathroom visit in the middle of the night. Look for the cause of any clanging and banging, particularly in a bathroom that is adjacent to a bedroom.
8. Be sure to seal your windows and doors.
Keep drafts and annoying rattles out of the bedroom by making sure all your doors and windows are solid and secure.
9. Keep the air in your bedroom clean.
Place an air purifier or humidifier in your room to keep the air quality at its best. Allergens and excessively dry air can easily disrupt your sleep. They also make waking up extremely unpleasant. Many of these machines also produce white noise, which will conveniently drown out other distracting sounds.
10. Finally, it’s time to get organized.
Sort through your closets and find homes for your clothing and other personal items. A chaotic, messy room can be very stressful. Don’t try to fall asleep when everywhere you look you see shoes and clothes scattered all over the floor. It’s easier to sleep well knowing that everything is in its place.
