How to Start – Make Your Home Clutter Free

We have all been there: Searching for that one item you just never can seem to find. Opening drawers and looking on the shelves (you are almost certain you saw it there yesterday). As you continue your search you think to yourself: I have to sort out this mess and organise it better. Yet again you never do it. Why? As human beings we cannot face the possibility of going through our own disorder or be more organised, because it is just such a big job. I mean where do I start, you haven’t even seen the loft yet.


Getting started on your “De-cluttering” project is the hardest part, you will be surprised to find how easy it is and once you have taken that first initial step, you just want to continue and not stop until you are satisfied with the job at hand. So start with something small. Open you cutlery drawer and scan through all the items, we all have those wonky utensils in the back that are long due for the bin and all these other small things, what are they actually used for anyway? Get it all out and start again. Arrange them in the order of the items you use the most in the front of the drawer and work your way back.

Clutter can get everywhere if you don’t control it. It’s important to put in place some rules to help clear clutter in your home and help you keep your house a place where you love to spend time in, and love to invite others to.

A great way of getting rid of clutter is to really question yourself philosophically with some scenarios that help you think about what is important to you. For example, if my house was on fire, and i had 5 minutes to run around and gather the important items to me, what are the items that i would take with me? Or, if I had to move house and only had one car and one journey to take my possessions to my new home, what would i take with me? These are some great questions to help you discover what you consider important in your home and what maybe isn’t as important as you thought.


Another great idea to help clear your clutter out of your home is for every time you introduce an item to your household, something has to go. For example, say you buy a new lamp for your bookcase. If it’s replacing an old lamp, chuck the old lamp out. Don’t keep it, take it to the garbage dump or donate it somewhere. Don’t leave it in your garage to fester. Or how about, for every one thing that comes into your household, dump two things in order to speed things up in the whole de-cluttering process. For example, a new lamp might mean chucking out the old lamp and the old replacement lampshade that’s been sitting on the top shelf of your storage for years.


How about going through all your items in your household and making a decision to either retain the item, sell it, give it away, recycle the item, or simply throw it in the trash. This can help simplify your decision making process, as it can be hard to know what to do with some items. A way to help this is to have a time frame for items. I have a friend who does not keep anything he hasn’t used for more than six months. He just simply goes through his household items every half year and gives each item either one of those five tags. If he decides to keep the item, there’s a good reason to keep it and he has a home for that item. If he gets rid of an item, he does so in the most appropriate way. Now I know this is an extreme example, but it’s a helpful starting point to help clear your clutter effectively.


Finally, as mentioned before, have a home for every item in your home and be strict with yourself about maintaining this rule to help clear your clutter. Make sure that papers are filed away, books are put back on their book shelves, clothes are put back in their closets, and so on. The floor and work surfaces are no place to leave things so make sure they are clutter free by making sure they are free from things that have a home elsewhere.

There are a lot of cleaning products today that are full of harsh chemicals that are not only hazards to your health, but also unhealthy for the environment. In our efforts to tackle tough jobs around the house, we tend to focus on getting the job done no matter what the cost, and sometimes pass up green cleaning products. This can be for many different reasons, whether we want a quick fix with cleaners that battle stains with chemicals, or because some ‘green’ cleaning products are priced higher than other cleaners.


The problem is that many of these cleaning products are actually worse than their natural counterparts. For one thing, breathing in harsh chemicals can make you sick, and if you mix the wrong things together, like bleach with ammonia, the combination can actually kill you. What many people don’t know or realize is that there are actually many green cleaning products that can be found in the home already, or can be purchased rather cheaply.


For example, instead of using harsh cleaning products to revitalize your coffee pots, clean the coffee pot with simple white vinegar. Pour a pot full of vinegar into your maker and run it as you would when making your coffee. One run through and you will see how much has built up, and sometimes the vinegar that comes out can be as dark as your coffee would be. Once you have run a pot full through the first time, run a half pot of vinegar and water mixed through a second time. Then run just water through a couple of times to rinse it out.
