Landscape Lights Are the Final Touch For Beauty

Published by Orlando Designer under Landscaping

There’s an extra element to landscaping that many people don’t even think about, and that’s lighting. In broad daylight, of course, there’s no need for lighting, as you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy your front or backyard, meticulously designed just the way you want it, with no problem at all. But, what’s the point in lighting your yard at night, you’ll be asking yourself.

Security

Outdoor lights are one of the best accessories you can add to your home from a security issue. Everyone should have a porch light, so those hard-working pizza drivers can find your house if nothing else! But with a porch light or a lamp post illuminating your front door, this provides extra security against intruders.

And it’s not even so much to guard against intruders. Who hasn’t fumbled with their keys when trying to fit a key into a lock they can’t see? Placing a row of lights next to your garden paths can ensure that unsuspecting feet don’t step off into the flower beds.

Accents

Why just be able to enjoy the beauties of your gardens at night? With strategically placed lights you can enjoy your miniature fountains or waterfalls, water gardens or rock gardens at any time. Indeed, they may even look more spectacular at night. And its not just a question of accenting your garden. By lighting up your entire home with carefully placed spotlights, it can be made a work of art in itself.

Celebrating the seasons

Lots of people put up lights for the holidays – and go to a great amount of trouble stringing lights on their garage and on the eaves of their house. Then, two weeks later, they go through all the trouble of taking those lights down again. By designing a lighting system that will be semi-permanent, you remove the need for all that extra work. Simply change out the bulbs for those of different colors, depending on the season.

Where’s the power come from?
Give a thought to your lighting needs. If you choose line voltage fixtures that can get their power from your home’s electrical system, you’ll want the wires to run underground. You’ll want to have these installed by a professional. Also, make sure that you have a plan of where these underground wires are installed, because if you do any digging in future – or if you sell the home and the new owner wants to do some digging – it will be all too easy to cut through these wires if no one knows where they are.

The other choice that also works great, is to use solar light fixtures. These feature a solar cell that absorbs energy from the sun and stores it in rechargeable batteries. These types of lights are easily installed by the homeowner, but how long they will last can be a question.

To find out what kinds of lights are available, visit your local home and garden or home improvement center. However, a lot of companies offer their wares on the web as well. Seagull Lighting has practically every type of outdoor light you can imagine, as does Lights by Lighthouse.

Finish Off Your Landscape With Elegant Brick Edging

Published by Orlando Designer under Landscaping

A few years ago, my dad got tired of the mis-matched rocks and broken bricks that my mom used to line the flower beds around our house. So he and I went to a local home improvement store and bought about a dozen scalloped brick edgers for her to use instead. We brought them home, and then went off again on another errand.

When we returned, my mom had already put the brick edgers in place the way she wanted them. Because there weren’t enough of the edgers to stretch to all the flowerbeds, she’d interspersed the edgers with those same old broken bricks and rocks. So it rather spoiled the effect. My dad just threw up his hands and gave up. There’s no doubt about it, when it comes to designing landscaping my mother does not have any taste. But if you ask her about it she’ll say that she likes the way everything looks.

There’s not much point to that story, except to say that either you have good taste or you don’t, and if you don’t have good taste hopefully you’re self-aware enough to know it, and hire someone else to do your designing!

What makes good taste? Well, it’s not necessarily a liking for wood over metal, or metal over plastic. All that is a matter of personal taste and is not necessarily bad or good. But if you’re going to have a series of bookcases in your home, for example, they should be all the same design – all wood, all metal, all plastic – so that they match and don’t detract from the eye. That’s the key to good taste.

If you do have an eye for design, then you’ll probably find that your landscaping can be set off quite elegantly with the addition of brick patio stones, paving stones and landscape edgers. As with any other landscaping accessory, these bricks come in a vast variety of colors and designs, so that you’re sure to find something you like. Only please, buy enough so that you can use them on every project, and if you run out – go back to the store and get more! Don’t ruin the effect by adding broken brick and rocks…it just doesn’t work.

Use brick to line your flower beds, build up retaining walls, or make pathways.

Add a patio

If you’d like to add a brick patio to your backyard, it’s quite easy to do, but you do have to give it some thought. Take some time to ensure that the ground where you want to place the patio is level – otherwise some of the bricks might settle and others will rise and give the patio an unfinished look. Also if live in an area with frequent frost or snow, where the ground has a tendency to heave up, you’ll have to take that into consideration. Consult with your local home improvement store professional to learn the best ways of building your patio. As for the design of the bricks, you can get plain brick and place them in rows, or alternate them vertically and horizontally, or do a sort of basket weave. The design is pretty much up to you. However, check your local building or neighborhood codes to make sure they don’t have any say over whether or not you can add a simple patio.

As with any landscaping feature, design what you want on paper first, before you go out and purchase the material. Then, go out and buy your material, pick up a couple of pairs of sturdy gloves to protect your hands, and get to work!

Add A Bridge and Pond To Your Landscaping

Published by Orlando Designer under Landscaping

There is no limit to the kinds of landscaping you can do in your backyard. You are limited only by your imagination.

If you have a large back yard, give some thought to installing a water garden, with a bridge crossing over it. Water gardens can provide such a soothing vista to the eye, and the bridge over it will add a charming touch.

It’s quite possible for you to buy a bridge kit from home improvement stores, and even from the internet. Such companies as Garden Bridges offer a wide variety of bridges, constructed of wood or metal, depending on your preferences. These bridges vary in length from 4 feet upwards, and from bridges with no rails to one rail, to a rail on both sides, or simple rails of rope.< http://www.mastergardenproducts.com> Master Garden Products is another site that offers a variety of bridges – to span masses of sand, or rock, or water.

For a bridge you need water for it to span

If you’d like to add a pond or water garden to your backyard, it’s certainly possible for you to do it yourself. You’ll have to make your plan carefully so that you can build it as efficiently as possible. The best thing to do is purchase a do-it-yourself kit which comes with all the materials you’ll need, all specially shaped so that you won’t have to bother yourself with that part of it. However, be aware that adding a pond is extremely labor intensive.

Clearwater Landscapes is a company that not only offers do-it-yourself pond kits, but also waterfalls! If a backyard pond is a great conversation piece, think of what the addition of a small waterfall would do. Pond Solutions is another company that offers a variety of design kits.

What to know before you start

Before you can start building your pond, you’ll first have to check the electrical and city codes for your area to make sure you can build the pond that you want.

Then determine where you want your pond. You must give this a lot of thought, as once it’s installed it would be extremely inconvenient to move. If you live in a location that gets very cold, or has lots of snow in winter, that will be a consideration as well. Because the water in a pond is always moving, thanks to the pump, it will probably never freeze…but it is important that you maintain the pump properly so that the worst does not happen.

It’s only after you decide on the type of pond you’ll have that you’ll get the bridge to go over it!

But it’s not necessary to have a water garden or pond in order to enjoy the look of a bridge. Japanese gardens, for example, quite often have a bamboo bridge simply leading right up to the edge of a rock garden. You’ll want to surf the web to see all the possibilities, and then take it from there.

Front Yard Landscaping Lessons – Driveway Access

Published by Orlando Designer under Landscaping

In creating a convenient, inviting, and attractive entryway to your home and property, you should first think about functionality and then plants and materials later. With the main function of front yard landscaping generally being access, our first design focus would be how and where we enter and exit our homes.

To what extent you can plan the front yard may be limited by some landscaping circumstances that you can’t control. The size of your lot, how your home faces the street, and property lines can all be limiting factors. However, with some careful planning, you may be able to reach a medium of functionality and beauty in the front.

By first laying out your needed or desired access paths, you could possibly be laying out the framework of your entire design. Not only will it take up a lot of space, but will also create shape, areas to design around, and a visual direction for your thoughts.

Generally, the most predominant access use is for vehicles and parking. So our first focus should be where we and our guests are going to park and drive in the front. Also, walkway access from these areas to the front door, side door, or any other entry points of the home needs to be considered.

Most folks need a driveway that not only leads to the home but also allows room for offstreet guest parking. So if this is a needed or desired landscaping element, we should start designing with that in mind.

The driveway entrance should be wide enough to comfortably move in and out of. It’s not required but a lot of times it is desirable to also have a way to turn around inside the driveway. This is an added safety factor to keep from having to blindly back out onto busy streets.

If you have room, a circular drive usually provides the best access to entries along with the safety factor of drive through. It also provides some shape and an opportunity for landscaping inside of the outer circle of the driveway.

Many times when a complete semi-circle drive isn’t possible, there may be room for a simple cutout addition. This area can also be used as additional parking when needed. It doesn’t necessarily need to be paved as it won’t receive the same amount of use and traffic as the rest of the drive.

Simply widening the driveway in an area can provide additional parking as well as enough room to turn around. Again, this area doesn’t have to be paved or totally improved. It just has to drain well and support the weight of a car.

By first addressing your vehicle access to your home, you’ll have one necessary element taken care of and less area to have to have to plan for. Then by adding foot access from driveway areas to the home, you’ll possibly have the entire framework of your front yard landscaping created.

Landscape Design Plans To Help Set the Scene

Published by Orlando Designer under Landscaping

When it comes to surroundings and scenery, who wouldn’t like to customize what they see whether they wander it or sit back and relax in it? Some like the scenery that is just them, while others like to blend in with their scenery. It’s a matter of preference. Landscape plans can give many a step closer to whatever their desires in this area.

You find a time in your life when you consider changing your landscape, and may even look for outside ideas that can get you there faster. Landscape plans can bring you somewhere between your complete landscaping picture, and at least good ideas sooner. As with anything significant though always remember to take all the time you need in deciding.

So what’s in a landscape? That’s a tough question as the number of answers is at least a multiple of the number of people asking. Everyone has their own views, and so do you. Taking your time looking no matter what your end goals are; will definitely bring you many great images closer to what you want.

Some of the basics you will find in nearly all landscape plans are vegetation, and structures that will accentuate them. Keep in mind the best landscapes look great from midnight, sunup, noon, late in the afternoon, sundown, and beyond! These are among the views you will want to see in your endeavors.

There are many that have carried out extensive landscaping projects. Many of them are professional landscapers that have a lot of the knowledge on how to put it all together. Their experiences are often found in a wide variety of settings including home improvements, gardening, farming, building, and other construction related fields. They should not only have a good eye for what will improve a landscape, but also often know exactly what needs to be done to make it so.

Many of the sources for landscape plans come from these professionals, however there are many other do it yourselfers with experience and plans out there as well. Just about anything that can be done has come out with much more information anymore as a result of mass communication. With this you may be able to get closer to what you want with less time and effort.

Though don’t look for one immediate answer in landscape plans that puts the picture you want together overnight. Actually long after you will still be finding yet more ideas that improve the image you desire. Take your time and put significant effort in, and you will find your dream landscape.

One good source for more landscaping ideas, plans, and pictures is where you found this article. Among them there should be many views for you to mold your own from. Take your time to look at these resources and the links elsewhere that they can bring you.

What you can expect to find are many topics of gardening, building, and cosmetics that will accentuate the beauty, while neatly storing the necessary things (such as your yard tools, maintenance supplies, etc…). Among these you should be able to find a vivid look that will indeed be great whether day or night.

If you are seeking your own landscaping you will realize though that all the resources in the world, won’t add up to the exact picture of your own. While they can assist you greatly in setting your scene, your scene will be unique to itself, and only you can make the final decisions as to what will make it the greatest. Take your time and you will indeed have many great views over a long time to remember it by.

In the end, you want something. It doesn’t matter what you want the images for, you deserve to have the best resources at your hands to come by it with. Landscape plans can be a very useful part of this.

Landscaping Tips – Hiring The Right Landscaper

Published by Orlando Designer under Landscaping

Although we live in a do-it-yourself culture, there are sometimes when it pays to hire a professional. Landscaping can be a perfect example of this. A quality landscaper will have equipment, know how, design skills, and talents to transform your property into a living show piece.

Landscaping can be complicated and labor intensive. It can require specialized tools and equipment. Landscaping is also an art, and the experts have a strong understanding of good design, composition and aesthetics that allows them to make the most of any piece of land. Professional landscapers also possess voluminous knowledge about various plants, grasses and trees that assists them in making the best possible decisions for any given job.

Try as we might, we can’t, as amateurs, produce the breathtaking results that a professional landscaper can. Thus, if we need serious landscaping help, it makes sense to call in the expert. That part of the decision calculus is relatively easy. Once we decide to hire a pro, however, another question emerges: how can we choose the right landscaper. Let’s look at a few helpful hints that can point those in need of professional landscaping assistance in the right direction.

First, don’t let cost make your decision. We have a natural inclination toward bargain hunting, but the old maxim “you get what you pay for” is often true. A cut-rate provider may keep your wallet thick, but the grass could turn out thin and brown. Cost is always a consideration, but one should not compromise the integrity of their landscaping project in order to save a few dollars.

Second, ask for reference and then take a look. Get references from prospective landscapers and then take the time to actually follow up on them. Take a personal look at their handiwork and see what you think about the quality of their efforts. Talk to former customers about the landscaper’s ability to get work done on time and other important considerations. Your landscaper will be making potentially permanent changes to your property. Take the extra effort required to make sure those changes will be positive.

Third, call appropriate agencies. Check with the Better Business Bureau and other consumer watch dogs and find out whether the landscaper in question has been the subject of any complaints or valid criticisms. This is not a foolproof way to weed out sub par options, but if you find that a prospective contractor is a magnet for consumer complaints, it only makes sense to think twice before hiring them.

Fourth, talk about the project. Before making a decision, spend time on the property discussing the project with the landscaper. Get a feel for his or her vision of the project and find out whether or not he or she is receptive to your ideas and capable of meeting your specific needs. The fact that a landscaper did a wonderful job on a modern commercial property doesn’t necessarily demonstrate an ability to handle the yard of your restored Victorian home, after all. Make sure you have found the right person for the job.

Following these recommendations won’t necessarily guarantee landscaping success, but doing so will improve your odds of hiring the right landscaper considerably. Remember not to cut corners, to check references, to consult with consumer agencies, and to have a meaningful discussion or two about the project in order to assess whether a specific landscaper is the right person for the job.

Landscaping may not always be a do-it-yourself project, but that doesn’t mean you have to rely on the first professional you find in the Yellow Pages. Take the time to find the right landscaper for you!
