Why is choosing colors for your painting jobs so difficult? You would think it would be as simple as saying “paint my house blue” or “I like yellow, paint it yellow”. But the truth is that even white comes in a bewildering array of choices. Once you understand the lingo, paint choices become much easier. You can figure it out and soon you will be talking like an interior designer. After all, you now know how to order coffee like a barrista when you order an upside down grande soy latte with a pump of mocha and two sprinkles of cinnamon, right?
The language of color.
Knock, knock, Hue’s there.
Hue is what interior designers say when they mean color. When primary colors (red, yellow, blue) are combined they make all the colors you can see and imagine. It starts to get more complicated when you start talking about value and intensity.
Value
When it comes to talking about color, value doesn’t mean bargain it refers to light or dark. Value is how much white, gray or black is added to a pure color. Value will give you a “dark” blue or a “pale” yellow. Sometimes, just to make it more confusing, this will be referred to as tint, shade, or tone.
Intensity
Value and intensity are closely related. Intensity is a way to measure the brightness of a color. The important thing to remember is that low intensity colors are often used as the main color for a room while high intensity colors are commonly used as accents
Temperature
No, you are not going to stick a thermometer into a can of paint and know it’s temperature. When it comes to color you are certain to hear someone try to explain it by saying it is a cool blue, a fiery red, a warm yellow.
Alright, now that you are more confused than when you started don’t worry. Head to the paint store and start dropping your new knowledge on the paint clerk. Try saying something suave like “As far as hue and value go I would like to stay in the dark red with a high intensity but a cool temperature”, don’t be surprised if they lead you straight to what you are looking for. Because now, you are speaking their language.
