Many people have bathrooms so small that the tub, vanity and toilet are only a few steps from each other, leaving barely enough space to walk. Even if this is the situation, you can make the room look charming.

Paint Can Work Miracles

Nearly anything can be accomplished with paint. Paint your ceiling bright white, and your walls a pale or pastel shade of sand, peach or buttercup yellow if you have a small bathroom. By painting all the trim around the floors and doors white, you can add some real interesting contrast. If you have a larger bathroom it’s possible to get away with using deep, rich colors. Some colors, such as burgundy, mauve and forest green, are truly beautiful colors for larger bathrooms.

Give Life to the Walls

Your bathroom, even if it’s small needs something for the walls; if the walls don’t have anything they may look dull and boring. Something to think about is hanging another mirror on the wall opposite your vanity so that you can reflect light and add dimension to the room. By hanging a large print on a wall that is brightly colored, you can further lighten up the bathroom if it’s small. The clutter of using too many pictures, sconces and such may actually make the room look smaller.

What will allow you to quickly improve your bathroom’s appearance? Getting a new shower curtain for the bathroom! Livening up the room is easy if you use a brightly colored print, but you can also use a solid colored one just as long as it complements the colors of the décor. By using an extra shower curtain you’ll be able to make window curtains and a waste basket cover. Your bathroom will look well put together, and you won’t have to spend too much money.

Something that adds a nice, feminine touch to any bathroom, no matter the size, is wicker baskets filled with soaps, rolled up washcloths and small lotion bottles. Consider placing a large plant in the corner if your bathroom is large. Floors should be kept in a light shade in smaller bathrooms whenever possible.

Though remodeling the bathroom might be a little beyond your means, it is possible to do other things that can make the room appear more spacious and open. Your bathroom’s look can be transformed by the simple use of color and lighting. The following are a few ideas which can quickly be put to use now!

Use the Right Colors

You can also reflect light using mirrors, and the reflection from the mirrors can also make the room appear larger. Something to consider would be hanging an extra mirror on a single wall, and preferably where it can reflect light from the windows.

Add More Floor Space

Though you won’t be given more room to walk, taking out your old vanity can make a huge change in your bathroom’s appearance. Most vanities have doors, drawers, and other types of cabinetry for storing your necessities.

Your room’s appearance will change in an amazing manner if you remove and replace your vanity with a pedestal style one. Pedestal vanities add a touch of elegance to the room and also take up very little floor space. Another place for storing your necessities should be found, something like a nearby linen closet. This small sacrifice will be worth the effort once you notice the improved appearance of your bathroom.

Simple Bathroom Decorating Ideas

Let’s just say it – one of the hardest rooms to decorate in the home is the bathroom, and it’s used a lot by guests. How can the room be livened up and be given character? Many things can be done, including some that you haven’t even heard of. The tips and ideas in this article will help you add ambiance, interest and even some romance to your bathroom.

If you have a bathroom that is small or one that is large and spacious doesn’t really matter, it can be made to look appealing and beautiful.

Liven up the walls

You might be under the impression that the only way to decorate your walls is with white pain, especially if you have a smaller bath. If a solid color is going to be used, you should keep it light. Although, if you want to use a pattern or design, rich hues of amber, burgundy and gold are perfect, along with any other colors that may fit your décor. Vertical stripes can actually make a smaller bathroom look visually taller. You can paint the stripes on manually, or it can be done with wallpaper that has a wide stripe.

You can also use the rubber stamping technique on your bathroom walls, as it lets you take many liberties with the design you want to place on them. You can add an element of texture to the room with faux finishes, which are highly popular today.

Lighting sets the mood

Using two different kinds of lighting in a bathroom is usually necessary. Lots of people want to use bright lights around the vanity mirror, it makes it easier for them to apply make up, shave, etc. Other than task lighting, you can add a bit of a romantic ambiance to a large bathroom with low wattage ceiling lights.

Placing a sconce on one wall and using a 60 watt bulb is a way off getting the effect in a smaller bath. This will provide a nice warm ambiance for when relaxing in the tub after a stressful day is all you want to do.

Time for a few personal touches

Now that you’re done with the walls and lighting, it’s time to add a few accessories to the room in order to add some appeal. The items you use should reflect your own personality, like a boldly-colored vase filled with greenery or even an old trunk filled some of your favorite accessories if space permits.

Use your imagination and creativity! You aren’t really adding to much interest to a room with a soap dish and toothbrush holder. The most luxurious towels you can afford should be used for display in order to add a few more splashes of color to the room.

Accenting is great if the bathroom isn’t too small, and it’s an option that many people don’ think about but it can add lots of character. You can hang sheer panels from the ceiling and have them drape softly around the edge, having them pull back to the wall around 8 inches above the tub’s edge. Two full sized mirrors should be placed on the walls around the tub, and man, talk about romance! Imagine relaxing in a tub filled with rich, soothing oils and the flicker of a candle reflecting in the mirrors.

Your decorating sense will simply amaze your guests – and with just a bit of imagination, there will be no end to what you can do to make the bathroom look great.

Small Bathroom Shower Design Options

How to fit a small bathroom shower

What do you do if you want to install a shower but you only have a very small bathroom?

While I love my bathtub for the rare occasions that I get to use it for a long relaxing soak, I don’t know what I would do without my shower. Showers are quick, refreshing and a lot more economical than taking baths. When I had the chance to redesign my small bathroom I jumped at the opportunity to improve the shower that was installed above the bathtub at the time.

The first thing to remember is that there usually is a way to do these things and you mustn’t give up before you’ve really thought about the problem. Don’t be put off by the fact that you don’t seem to have much room to play with in your bathroom design.

So what are the options?

Throw the bathtub away

Taking out the bathtub will give you more than enough room to fit a sizeable shower enclosure. Unfortunately you won’t have a bath anymore. While this might fit in well with your current lifestyle you might want to think about what you might have need of a few years down the line and when you come to sell your property.

When you sell a property you must have a bathroom with a bathtub even if it has a great shower instead. People expect to find a bath in the bathroom and the lack of one can seriously depress the value of your property.

Put your shower in your bathtub

If you have no other option you can install a showerhead above your bathtub together with a shower curtain or splashguard. This should be the easiest solution, as it will take up no additional floor space. Personally I’m not keen on this option.

Turn your bathroom into a wet room

This is an ambitious design that will involve turning the floor of your entire bathroom into a giant shower base and drain. It can be a very expensive option to convert a conventional bathroom into wet room but it has the advantage of allowing you to put your small bathroom shower anywhere you like. Even over the toilet if you want to although I wouldn’t advise it.

Install a curved quadrant shower cubicle

The option that I like best for any bathroom is to install a separate shower enclosure either free standing in the room or in a corner of the bathroom. This is a great solution if you can find the space to accommodate the shower enclosure.

The problem with this idea is finding the space in a small bathroom to fit the shower enclosure. Enclosures come in various sizes so you will need first of all to decide on the smallest size that you think you can live with. Even a very small shower enclosure is better than none at all.

To make the space available you should consider the whole small bathroom design. Find a smaller toilet and washbasin and even a smaller bathtub if you have to. Use squared paper and cut out shapes to try many different ways of arranging everything.

Finally look at curved quadrant shower enclosures as a space saving alternative to square or rectangular ones. Finding one of these was the turning point in my small bathroom shower design. Everything fell into place nicely after that.

Also, the color of the walls or the wallpaper selected to be placed have to match the rest of the area, like the floor, the sink and the bathtub creating a unified outcome. If you decide to go with the wallpaper option, be extremely cautious as it has to be installed really well in order not to fall off the walls as you steam your bath.

Finally, keep your bathroom organized and clean. Numerous scattered items give a feeling of clutter and do not help you enjoy this room of your house. Furthermore, select towels and bathrobes that are soft and fluffy. Selecting the Appropriate Shower

I have recently carried out some home improvements, one being our bathroom. I know what style shower enclosures, toilet and sink I wanted but I didn’t realise how complicated buying an actual shower was. Here is what I learnt…

If you have a combination boiler or hot water cylinder than a mixer shower is perfect. You need to have hot water available as it takes both hot and cold water and mixes them to reach the right temperature. Have you ever been in the shower when the water goes freezing as someone downstairs has turned the tap on? This is because you have a manual model. If you go for the thermostatic model this will not happen as it will stay at the same temperature throughout your shower.

The other type of shower is an electric shower. As it says in the name these are powered through your electricity supply and use a lot of energy they do however have a more controlled heat and only heat the amount of water that is required. The benefit of this is if your boiler breaks you can still have a hot shower!

The easy way to look at it is if you have to turn the taps to turn the shower on it is a mixer shower. If you have to press a button it is an electric shower.

I had to go for the mixer shower which I am pleased about as I really really like my taps and they match the basin taps!
